Equality for South Korean Women in 2020

ON

SEATTLE, Washington — Women in South Korea are gradually starting to change equality for themselves and their futures. Many countries around the world are starting to place a lot of importance on gender equality, and South Korea is one of those countries. Individuals are taking a stand to demand equality for South Korean women.

Younger Citizens Push for Equality for South Korean Women

Based on surveys, South Korean women believe that men in their country have more opportunities to get high-paying jobs. In 2010, 26% of women in South Korea believed that men had a better life than women. In 2019, however, that percentage went up to 47%, displaying that South Korean women are more skeptical of their equal rights than before.

There are some in South Korea who believe that men should have preferential treatment with jobs, particularly in seasons of high unemployment and job scarcity. However, 46% believe that men should not have preferential treatment. In fact, at least 56% believe that gender equality in South Korea is very important.

There is also optimism that times are changing in South Korea. Those ages 18 to 29 are more likely to disagree with those ages 50 or older about the right that men have preferential treatment of jobs over women. Equality for South Korean women starts with the current generation.

South Korean Women Hurdle Startling Pay Gap

One of the main types of inequality South Korean women face is economic disadvantages. South Korea is one of the lowest-ranked countries in terms of the gender gap, ranking near the bottom of the list. Based on economic opportunities for women in South Korea, the country ranked 124 out of a possible 149.

Women deal with questions about marital status– and more personal questions about their plans for children– simply while applying for a job. This suggests that these factors influence whether employers hire them. Moreover, according to the Glass Ceiling Index, South Korea sits at the bottom in terms of the country’s 35% pay gap between men and women. This gender inequality not only has a tremendous effect on women in all facets but it also has a dooming effect on South Korea’s economy.

The fight against South Korean women’s inequality persists as women choose not to start families, including not marrying or having children. This is going to directly affect South Korea’s economy. One solution is to integrate women into more workforces. By not solving the issues of gender inequality, poverty cannot improve.

Women are Changing South Korea Socially

A push to pursue education is changing equality for South Korean women. Now, women are graduating with more degrees than men in South Korea. Women now feel that they are too well educated to have the same status that they have held for such a long time.

The number of women actively participating in the workforce in 2019 is 52.89%. Today’s women in South Korea are also more vocal about socially conscious issues than ever before, especially the previous generations. Change is still happening too slowly for a lot of women in South Korea. However, one thing that women are proud of is the open discussion of gender inequality.

The Asia Foundation is a nonprofit organization that is determined to close the historic gender gap in South Korea. The Asia Foundation researched to figure out why women are not allowed the same opportunities as men. Some of the conclusions reached were discrimination, financial access and difficulty balancing work and life. The Asia Foundation is working to make sure that women’s entrepreneurial potential is completely tapped and fulfilled.

Looking To the Future

Poverty is one of the main issues that women in South Korea face because of gender inequality. South Korea ranks as one of the lowest-ranked countries in the gender gap. Women also deal with numerous types of inequality while applying for jobs. This gender inequality is also hurting South Korea’s economy and will hurt them in the future if this does not improve.

South Korean women are still struggling to end the gender gap that exists throughout their country. Women in South Korea believe that men have better opportunities for higher-paying jobs, they have better lives and they have preferential treatment to jobs. However, younger citizens in the country are more likely to disagree with older citizens about whether men should have preferential treatment to jobs over women.

Equality for South Korean women is making progress through furthering education, opting not to get married or start families and by women being vocal about the issues they face. A lot of women are happy and excited about the gender inequality conversations that are happening. The Asia Foundation dedicates itself to helping South Korean women tap their entrepreneurial potential and researches why opportunities for women are so far behind. A new season is coming, and one can look with optimism on the impact it will have on women’s equality in South Korea.

7 Healthy Morning Habits to Improve Your Day

If you are rushing around like a headless chicken first thing in the morning, your cortisol and stress levels will be almost at maximum before the day has really begun. High levels of stress and adrenaline will leave you feeling depleted later in the day.

The decisions you make in the morning will set you up for the day ahead. Making healthy and productive decisions will stand you in good stead for the day ahead, leaving you with a more positive and brighter outlook.

1. Take some exercise

This needn’t be a long hard slog on the treadmill at 5am; it simply means fitting it what you can. This could mean getting off the bus a stop early and power walking the last part of your journey. Exercise has proven to promote wakefulness and boost concentration more effectively than caffeine. Ditch the coffee and grab your trainers for a healthy, wakeful habit.

2. Focus on your breathing

Practicing calming breathing techniques will help to massage the vagus nerve, proven to have a calming effect.

Click here for NHS instructions on breathing exercise for stress.

3. Meditation

This is another healthy habit that could seem unfeasible, but it needn’t take up a large chunk of your time – it’s all about finding a way to fit things into your current lifestyle as sustainability is key. Try downloading Headspace to kick-start your meditation journey. If you don’t have time to sit and focus solely on doing it, have it on in the background whilst you get ready for the day or on your morning commute.

4. Drink a glass of water

10% of people who claim they are tired, are actually dehydrated. Making drinking a glass of water one of the first things you do in the morning.

5. Complete 10 reps of any exercise

This is as simple as it sounds. 10 push ups, 10 sit ups, 10 lunges, whatever takes your fancy. Make it one of the first things you do in the morning, because although how minor and how little time this will take, it is an accomplishment that you can tick off your list within 30 seconds which will set you onto a positive road for the day ahead.

6. Eat a protein rich breakfast

A meal high in protein will help to boost your energy, minimise cravings and leave you feeling satisfied for hours. Studies have also shown that a high protein diet can help to maintain a steady blood sugar level, supplying you with energy and productivity throughout the morning. For a healthy protein boost choose foods such as eggs, Greek yoghurt and smoked salmon. We have lots of delicious breakfast and brunch recipes for you to check out.

7. Have a cool shower

Reducing the temperature in the shower even slightly has been shown to have a mood boosting effect. Turn that dial down a notch to give your mind a refresh for the day ahead.

Explanation Text : How Covid-19 Impacts Tourism Sector

How Covid-19 Impacts Tourism Sector

The corona virus (Covid-19) pandemic has caused changes in the world, especially in tourism sector. Covid-19 causes tourist places to be empty because of social distancing.

When the tourists (local or foreign) visit a tourist spot, they will interact with people around them such as tour guides, managers or owners of tourist places, other visitors, and natives. This will cause the people to be infected by Covid-19 because there is no distance between one person and another. Also they may have physical contact with another people, especially those who have tested positive of Covid-19.

Therefore, the tourist places are temporarily closed due to social distancing to prevent the possibility of spreading Covid-19. Although this has an impact on tourist revenue, they must still close the tourist places until the situation returns.

Report Text : Slametan Tradition

Slametan Tradition

Slametan is a ritual tradition performed by Javanese people. Slametan is also done by Sundanese and Madurese people. Slametan is a form of thanksgiving event by inviting several relatives or neighbors. Traditionally the celebration event begins with prayer together, sitting cross-legged on a mat, encircling rice cone with side dishes.

The practice of the slametan ceremony as expressed by Hildred Geertz is generally embraced by the Abangan Muslims, while for the Putihan Muslims (santri) the practice of slametan is not entirely acceptable, except by removing the conspicuous shirk elements such as the gods and spirits. Therefore for the santri, slametan is a prayer ceremony together with a leader or modin which is then continued by eating together with a minimum in order to obtain the safety and protection of Allah.

Slametan is held to celebrate almost all events, including birth, death, marriage, moving house, and others. Geertz categorizes them into four main types :

- Related to life : birth, circumcision, marriage, and death
- Related to Islamic festivals
- Bersih desa (cleaning villages), related to the social integration of villages.
- Unusual events such as leaving for a long journey, moving house, changing the name, healing illness, healing from the influence of magic, and so on.

Slametan has become an Indonesian culture, especially Javanese society, as a form of gratitude to Allah. Positive things that can be taken from this tradition are getting closer to Allah (Hablum Minallah), establishing friendship with the surrounding community (Hablum Minannas), and self-awareness that humans cannot live alone. Slametan is very good for the nation's culture that is to share happiness in living life.

Narrative Text : A Good Friend

  A Good Friend

Once upon a time, there were two girls named Ella and Tina. They are friends since they were kids. They always go to the same school from Elementary School until they are in Senior High School. They always spent time together.
One day, they were in the canteen during break time. However, when Ella was about to pay for the food, she was surprised because she didn’t find her wallet. “Gosh! I lost my wallet!” said Ella. She thought that someone has stolen her wallet.
“I’m sure that you stole my wallet!” she accused Tina. “What did you say? I didn’t steal your wallet! You can’t accuse me without proof!” said Tina. “Do you think that I trust you? Don’t lie to me! I know you are the culprit.” Ella felt certain that Tina is the culprit who stole her wallet. “Ella, I'm your own friend but why do you do this to me? I thought you were my friend but it turns out I was mistaken all this time!” Tina got angry to Ella because she was accused even though she did nothing wrong.
Suddenly, a boy came to them and said “Ella, is this your wallet?” “Oh right, Leo! This is my wallet! Where did you find it and how did you know that this is my wallet?” asked Ella. “I found it dropped outside when you walked into the canteen. Then, I saw your student card in your wallet.” said Leo. “Thank you very much, Leo.”  said Ella “You’re welcome.” replied Leo.
“Tina, I’m sorry. I thought that you stole my wallet. It’s my fault but I accused you. I know I’m not a good friend” Ella apologize to Tina. “Alright, I forgive you. But you must promise not to do this again.” said Tina. “Yes, I promise.” And then they hugged.

Recount Text : Weekend In Jetayu Square

Recount Text - Weekend In Jetayu Square

On the weekend, my friends and I went to Jetayu Square. Located in Jetayu street near to the Batik Museum, Residency Building, Post Office, Al – Ikhlas Mosque and Javanese Christian Church, Jetayu Square is one of the most popular place in Pekalongan.

We went to Jetayu Square by motorcycle. When we got there, we walked around the Jetayu Square. We saw a monument that reads the letter “BATIK” which is a characteristic of Pekalongan city. Beside that there is a monument that reads “Km. 0 Pekalongan” which shows the center point of Pekalongan City. Both of monuments will turn on at night. Many people who make the monuments as a photo object. We took some photos there.

We saw a lot of tress and the lamps mounted on trees that will turn on at night. Also we saw a few benches for people visiting there, some flowers that make the field more attractive and some street vendors selling snacks and drinks. After being satisfied around the Jetayu Square, we came home.

It was so much fun! Although we just walked around Jetayu Square, it was my most pleasant experience. Especially with my friends make my experience more memorable. I will often visit it.
